Pipe Repair Plumbers in Brooklyn, NY

One Brooklyn building can hold a century of pipe. Lead or brass comes in from the street. Galvanized steel climbs the walls. Copper shows up wherever someone renovated a bathroom, and cast iron carries the waste down. Each one fails in its own way, and a repair that works on copper will not hold on steel. A burst pipe with water running is a call for an emergency plumber.

Common Pipe Problems Our Plumbers Repair

Burst and Frozen Pipes

Pipes freeze where the building is thin: under the stoop, in a rear extension over a crawl space, behind kitchen cabinets on an outside wall. The outdoor hose faucet is the usual winter casualty - shut its inside valve and drain it by Thanksgiving. Keep the heat on in an empty apartment, even set low, since a cold vacant unit can freeze the riser that feeds every unit above it. Thaw a frozen pipe with a hair dryer and an open faucet. A torch starts fires inside walls.

Galvanized Steel and Brass Pipes

Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside until a one-inch pipe has a pencil-sized opening. The signs are weak pressure upstairs and brown water first thing in the morning. It cannot be patched in the middle. We unthread back to a sound fitting, and with eighty-year-old threads that can mean chasing the run a few feet further. Old brass goes brittle and weeps at the threads. New copper joins old steel through a brass fitting so the two metals do not eat each other.

Copper Pinhole Leaks

Copper fails by pinhole - a green crust, then a fine spray. One pinhole is a repair. Several on the same run mean the pipe wall is thinning along its whole length, and replacing that section costs less than the fourth service call. Clamps and epoxy putty buy a night. Hidden pinholes are a job for leak detection before any wall comes down.

Cast Iron Stacks and Lead Service Lines

Cast iron drain stacks crack along the back, where nobody looks, and show rust blisters and a sewer smell before they drip. The cracked length gets replaced with new cast iron and banded couplings. Below the floor, drain trouble moves to sewer line repair. On the water side, check the pipe entering your basement. Lead service lines were legal in NYC until 1961, and the DEP service line map lists the City's record for your address.
